I know a lot of you are wanting PR for your brands, and that is something that is very possible. But before working towards that, it’s important to understand the basics before diving head first.

This is about being more informed so your efforts are intentional and your interactions within the industry are stronger.

Fashion PR is one of the most misunderstood parts of the industry. Most people think they understand it because of content and cult classics we all love, like The Devil Wears Prada & The Hills,, but in reality, they’re only familiar with the most visible parts of it. So, let’s break it all down:

What People Think Fashion PR Is

What most people understand about fashion PR is based on what they see, including:

  • Sending product to influencers
  • Pitching editors
  • Getting featured in magazines
  • Hosting events and brand activations

This is the aftermath of the execution, not the foundation of what fashion PR really is. In some cases, especially when it comes to influencer gifting, this can overlap with marketing, which is why the two are often confused.

What Fashion PR REALLY Is

Fashion PR is bringing media attention and visibility to a fashion brand, and more importantly, shaping public perception through:

  • Brand positioning
  • Strong storytelling
  • Media strategy (especially in picking the right outlets to pitch to, not just mainstream fashion magazines)
  • Relationship building
  • Timing
  • Long term visibility

PR is earned, not controlled. You are pitching, not placing. Editors, stylists, and media decide what gets featured, not you. ecause of that, PR is not immediate. It is a long term strategy that builds over time and compounds. It is also important to understand that PR starts before outreach. It starts with the brand itself. If the positioning is unclear, the story is not strong, or the product does not align, PR cannot fix that. And not all visibility is valuable. PR is about being seen in the right places, by the right people, in the right context. PR supports the brand. It does not build it from nothing.

Who Needs Fashion PR?

Not every brand or person needs PR, and not everyone is ready for it. PR is most effective for:

  • Emerging designers & brands who have already built a strong foundation and are prepared for increased visibility
  • Thought leaders, experts, and those wanting to establish credibility and authority in their niche

PR works best when there is already something strong to amplify. It is not meant to figure things out for you, it is meant to support what is already in place.

Who Doesn’t Need Fashion PR?

PR is not for:

  • Brands that are still figuring out their identity
  • Businesses that are not prepared to handle growth or demand
  • People looking for quick sales or immediate results

If the expectation is immediate return, PR will feel like it is not working. In reality, it is being used for the wrong purpose.

Fashion PR is not about quick wins or instant visibility. It is a long term approach to how your brand is positioned, perceived, and understood. When you understand that, you move differently. You are more intentional with how you show up, who you are trying to reach, and how you approach PR as a whole.
